Exploring the Schartenkopf (1636 m) and Laber (1686 m) peaks in Oberammergau was one of my favorite dog-friendly hiking adventures in the Ammergau Alps. The hike takes you through the protected Ammergau Alps Nature Park, which offers a mix of beautiful terrain. You don't have to be an expert hiker to enjoy these incredible views; this trail is perfect for beginners. And yes, it's a great hike to bring your dog!

Why This Hike is a Must-Do

—  Mixed Terrain: This hike in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park offers a wide variety of trails, from forest paths to steep climbs, and incredible views - it never gets boring!

—  Breathtaking Views: From Schartenkopf you can enjoy sweeping views of the Ammergau Alps and the charming Ettal valley below. On a clear day, the panorama is simply unreal.

Hanna and I are enjoying the amazing view from the Schartenkopf.

—  Flexible Hiking Adventure: Throughout this hike, you will encounter many different trails and paths to nearby peaks and summits that can easily be incorporated into your original hiking plans. Detours are a matter of minutes, not hours.

This hike, which takes about 4 hours, is one of my favorite dog-friendly hikes in the Oberammergau area. It's especially rewarding in the fall months when the leaves turn golden and the sun casts a golden light on the surroundings. The summit is physically challenging but rewards you with views that are second to none. Truly a must-do experience!

—  Starting point: Parking lot Laber Bergbahn

—  Distance: 11.7 km

—  Time Required: 4 hours

—  Difficulty: Moderate

—  Max. Height: 1686 m

—  Best Time to Visit: June to September

Pro Tips for Hiking to Schartenkopf and Laber Summit

—  Walk Counterclockwise for a Smoother Hike: From the parking lot, heading toward Schartenkopf instead of Laber makes the climb easier and the descent safer - perfect if you're on a dog-friendly trip.

—  Best Time to Go: The best months are June through September. I love the early fall season-fewer crowds and gorgeous fall colors. For sunset hunters, try to get to Schartenkopf by 7:30 p.m. in September.

—  Don't miss the view at Schartenkopf: While Laber Summit gets the most attention, Schartenkopf offers an unbeatable panoramic view. Trust me, it's worth the detour. And don’t be surprised to not see any sign or summit cross when you get there.

—  Add on: Ettaler Mandl: If you're up for more, add a 45-minute detour to Ettaler Mandl after the Laber Summit. But be prepared for a challenging climb.

View from the Schartenkopf (1636 m) to the Ettaler Mandl (1633 m).

—  What to Pack: Sturdy hiking boots are key, but good sneakers will do. Carry plenty of water and snacks, especially if you're considering extending your hike. There is much to explore in this area!

Is the Schartenkopf and Laber Summit Hike Dog-Friendly?

Bringing my loyal border collie Hanna on this hike was a win-win. She loved romping through the lush Bavarian forests and taking in the breathtaking views from Schartenkopf, even though some parts were a little tough for her.

There's one tricky spot before you get to Schartenkopf where you might have to lift your dog up some rocks. This section is the most physically demanding for dogs, but with a little teamwork it's totally doable. But it's not a big deal and Hanna handled it like a champ.

At the end of the hike, Hanna was exhausted but happy. If your dog is in good shape, you're in for a tail-wagging adventure!

How to Get to Laber Bergbahn: Parking and Public Transport Tips

Start at the Laber Bergbahn parking lot. Parking costs about €7 for the day.

Pro tip: Outside the high season, you may be able to find free parking nearby. You can also take public transportation to this bus stop.

Andy and I are motivated to start the hike.

First Steps in the Ammergauer Forest

From the parking lot, we start our hike counterclockwise towards Schartenkopf and Laber summit. Don't worry about the sign "NUR FÜR GEÜBTE! STEIG!", which means "Only for experienced hikers! Steep!” It's really not that challenging!

Just after the sign, enter the forest and follow the signs uphill for about 15 minutes. You will encounter a gutter that directs you towards “Soila Alm”. Keep an eye out for the first path that leads upwards; it's your way to avoid getting lost.

Look for a similar sign and turn left up the path.

The Ascent to Schartenkopf

After following the forest for another 40 minutes, we came to a plateau where we met some horses. After paddling them (I think horses are incredible!), we continued following the serpentine trails that take you up rocky terrain.

Andy and I were having fun padding horses. They seem to like it too! ❤️

These zigzags take you steeply uphill for an additional 35 minutes. This was a challenge for Hanna at times, but nothing to worry about. After a short but steep climb, you will reach the breathtaking view at Schartenkopf. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Hanna and I are enjoying the incredible view from the Schartenkopf summit.

Trek to Laber Summit

A short 10-minute hike on the ridge takes you to the Laber mountain station and the Laber summit. Are you hungry? There is a restaurant here where you can get something to eat. I don't know about the food though, the Google reviews are mixed.

Optional: Detour to Ettaler Mandl

After about 10 minutes you will reach a junction. Here you can take an optional 45-minute detour to Ettaler Mandl (1633m). If you go, be aware that there are some challenging and unsecured parts.

This time, however, we skipped this summit as we were short on time and decided to take the descent to our left.

Back to the Parking Lot

In the next two hours, we will be following downhill. Descend through woods and meadows, taking either the wild trail or the wider gravel road. Here we even met some peaceful cows. You can fill your water bottles at a stream and return to Laber Bergbahn, where we originally started.
